Monday
"Best of" Begins
The Bookgasm blog provides us with a fine list: 5 Best Sci-Fi Books of 2008.
They also have a great website desription: "BOOKGASM, the site dedicated to READING MATERIAL TO GET EXCITED ABOUT. That includes all kinds of genre fiction, from horror and sci-fi to mystery and suspense. It also includes graphic novels, trashy paperbacks, cheap magazines and other things that much of America pretends to be ashamed of, for no good reason."
Tuesday
Doctorow Audio
I have listened to sevral stories and a couple of novels from BoinBoing's Cory Doctorow's site: Craphound.com, he has podcasted many of his stories and a couple of novels, including After the Siege, Eastern Standard Tribe, and True Names.
Similar Short Stories
On Monday morning (while on the elliptical) I listened to two short stories about which I knew nothing. Oddly they both turned out to be about young women trying to break out of the restrictions of a small isolated community. I enjoyed them both quite a bit - When the Gentlemen Go By written by Margaret Ronald from Clarkesworld Magazine and Waiting for the Zephyr by Tobias Buckell from Telltale Weekly. I was telling CRL about it and she told me it was in the Wastelands Anthology. which is on my reading list.
Sunday
Listening at Tor.com
The stories that Tor.com has on their website have been impressive. Some of my favorite new authors - Stross, Scalzi, Doctorow, all have quality stories there. I've downloaded the mp3s and listened to them while on the elliptical torture device. It's been a perfect way to lose track of time while getting my exercise.
Saturday
I'm Listening
EscapePod has been a great source of SpecFic audio for me to listen to - especially while exercising. I searched mp3's for Hugo stories and ended up there. They have short stories from the last couple of Hugo years, in addition to their weekly stories. They're on a break, but the archive (down left column) is well worth a look.
